How Phase 1 guidelines affect golf courses in Montana

Thank you MSGA for this update!

Update from MSGA concerning 4/22 directive:

As you may know, the Governor announced Wednesday that the State would be gradually re-opened in 3 phases. Phase 1 currently has no expiration date and things will be closely monitored during this time. The Governor stressed that, just because some things are opening up, things are “not returning to normal” just yet.

Phase 1 guidelines can be read here, or you can go to covid19.mt.gov for more information. Below is a brief summary of how Phase 1 affects you.

Three things have NOT changed in Phase 1:
1) People who are vulnerable should continue to stay home.
2) Physical distancing (at least 6 ft) should still be maintained. Where this is difficult, fabric masks are recommended.
3) Good hygiene and sanitizing frequently touched surfaces should be maintained.

What HAS changed?
1) Starting 4/27, groups of 10 or less are permitted. Physical distancing must be maintained between small groups.
2) Retail shops (pro shops included) can reopen for business on 4/27, with reduced capacity. Physical distancing must be possible for customers waiting in line, and the waiting area must be closed/limited if this is not possible. Frequently touched surfaces must be sanitized. Employers should stagger work schedules to allow for more room between employees, and common areas where employees gather should be closed/limited.
3) Restaurants (including in clubhouses) can reopen on 5/4, with 50% capacity and a limit of 6 people to a table. Tables/open seating must be spaced to allow physical distancing. Drinks from the bar must be served at tables, not at the bar. For more specific direction about condiments, etc, I encourage you to read the Phase 1 document, Appendix A, page 8.

We have received several questions from you, including:
Will more than 1 per cart be allowed once restaurants reopen (since 6/table will be permitted)?
Will leagues/tournaments be allowed? Shotgun starts?
Should the approach to sand rakes, ball washers, flagsticks, etc, be relaxed?

We do not want to give out guidance based on assumptions. The Governor’s office plans to release a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on their website (covid19.mt.gov) in the next few days, and we have been told that it will include information on golf courses. What I listed above is straight from the Phase 1 Directive, and should give you the answers to most of your questions. We also encourage you to check with your local county health department if you have specific questions, as they will be the ultimate authority in your area.

As we receive further guidance and continue to navigate the Directive, we will pass this directly on to you.

Thanks for your continued efforts in following the guidelines to keep people safe! If in doubt, it may be best to err on the side of caution. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
